Club100 Senior SP40 South & SP60 Championships – Round 5 @ Lydd

Round 5 of the Club100 SP40 South and SP60 Championships took the action to Lydd on Saturday, with the championship picture becoming considerably clearer as the seven-round season enters its closing stages.

With races at Llandow and Silverstone remaining, there are now just two full rounds and four races remaining. The dropped-score system means each driver’s best 10 scores from the 14 races will count towards their final championship tally.

SP40 Heavyweight

Andrew O’Neill returned to the top step in SP40 Heavyweight after a dramatic Round 5. O’Neill and Joe Holmes both finished on 97 points, with Holmes winning Race 1 and O’Neill taking Race 2.

The overall victory went to O’Neill on a fastest lap tiebreaker, a mere eight thousandths of a second the margin! Alex Pritchard completed the podium with 88 points, while Charlie Wainwright and Tim Penny rounded out the top five.

Andrew O’Neill’s latest victory also has major championship significance. His total score, not counting drops, now stands at 490. That tally is more than 200 points ahead of Tim Penny’s score, counting drops, of 271. With a maximum of 200 points available for the remainder of the season, O’Neill can’t be caught and can afford to let the last four races of the season all be drops, even if Penny wins all remaining races.

SP40 Lightweight

Jack O’Neill continued his remarkable SP40 Lightweight season with another perfect performance at Lydd, winning both races to take the maximum 100 points.

Callum Martin finished second overall after a second place in Race 1 and third in Race 2, while Max Miller produced a strong recovery to take third after finishing sixth in the opening race before charging to second in Race 2. Stef Theodorou and Leo Engels completed the top five.

Likewise to brother Andrew, Jack O’Neill now has an unbeatable championship score from the first five rounds versus the achievable scores of all other drivers. Jack O’Neill adds another title to his Club100 CV – the master of the Saturday Lightweight series!

SP60 Lightweight

Lewis Marchant took the SP60 Lightweight honours after another impressive performance, recovering from fourth in Race 1 to win Race 2 and finish on 94 points.

Behind him, three drivers finished on 92 points. Andrew Graham won Race 1 before finishing sixth in Race 2, while Thomas Northcott scored third and second to take second overall on countback. Championship leader Jack O’Neill finished second and third, placing fourth overall after another highly competitive day. Callum Martin completed the top five.

Despite finishing fourth on the day, Jack O’Neill remains in an extraordinary championship position and in a growing theme across the course of the day, seals the championship with two rounds to go. Lightweight SP60 title number seven for Jack O’Neill, an incredible achievement.

SP60 Heavyweight

Andrew O’Neill produced another dominant display in SP60 Heavyweight, taking victory in both races for a maximum 100-point score.

Sam Iddles was runner-up with two second-place finishes, while Tim Penny completed the podium with a pair of third places. Zac Cuff and Samuel Bensley rounded out the top five.

In the Super Heavyweight class, Martin Cox was once again the leading SHW driver, finishing 17th overall and adding another strong haul to his subclass championship campaign.

Completing an incredible day for the O’Neill family, title number four of a super Saturday at Lydd was sealed by Andrew O’Neill. One more race victory from the four available this year will secure a perfect 500 point score in the championship. Astonishing!

Round 5 is complete and the championship picture has changed dramatically. With only four races remaining, all four Southern SP40 and SP60 championship leaders have now effectively secured their titles under the seven-round dropped-score calculations.

The remaining two rounds will decide the final championship positions and the battles for the runners-up places. Next up, Round 6 at Llandow in early September.
